Hoon Kwak
대구 출신의 작가 곽훈의 개인전이 갤러리 신라에서 개최된다. 서울대 미대를 졸업한 그는 1975년 미국으로 건너가 동양의 정신세계를 담아내는 작업을 통해 미국화단의 주목을 받은 작가로서 물질주의적 주류에 대한 문화적 도전을 제시하고 있다. 지난해 재개관한 LA카운티 미술관(LACMA:LA County Museum of art)의 한국관에 곽훈의 “다완(Tea Bowls)"이 전시되어있다. 색동천에 찻잔 수십여개가 조화를 이루고 있는 세련된 구도로 한인의 얼을 담은 이 작품은 그가 미국에 온 후 정체성과 전통을 의미로 80년대부터 끊임없이 천착해온 작품이며, 현대작품으로는 유일하게 전시되었다.
찻잔에 대한 그의 애착은 유일하게 미학적으로 오행이 다 들어가는 완벽한 대상이 도자기라 생각해서이다. 그가 처음 미국에서 그림을 그리겠다고 결심했을 때 그는 어릴 적 땅을 파면 나왔던 가야시대의 토기에서 영감을 얻었고, 그 스스로를 그릴 수 있는 주제가 바로 ‘샤머니즘’이라 생각했다. 그림은 나 자신을 그리는 것이라 여기는 곽훈은 40년 동안 <주문(Incantation)>, <다완(Tea Bowls)> , <기(氣)>, <겁(Kalpa,劫)> 등 왕성한 활동을 하고 있으며, 그의 작품들에서 느껴지는 그의 관조는 영겁과 찰나, 죽음과 생명을 똑바로 인식할 때까지 극단으로 나아간다. 그래서 소재와 스타일의 변화에도 불구하고 모든 작품이 정신적인 차원에서 하나로 이어지고 있다.

Daegu-born artist Kwak Hoon's solo exhibition will be held at Gallery Shilla. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University, he moved to the United States in 1975 and, as an artist who drew attention from the American art community through his work of capturing the spiritual world of the Orient, presents a cultural challenge to the materialistic mainstream. Kwak Hoon's "Tea Bowls" are on display at the Korean Pavilion of the LACMA (LA County Museum of Art), which reopened last year. The sophisticated composition of dozens of teacups in harmony with Saekdongcheon embodies the spirit of Koreans. This work is a work that he has been constantly pursuing since the 1980s in terms of identity and tradition after coming to the United States, and it is the only contemporary work to be exhibited.
